A no-cost extension extends the project period beyond the original project end date. As the phrase “no cost” suggests, there is no additional funding.
No-Cost Extension Eligibility
A no-cost extension may be requested when all three of the following conditions are met:
- The end of the project period is approaching, AND
- There is a programmatic need to continue the research, AND
- There are sufficient funds remaining to cover the extended effort
PIs and DLCI admins should also review award terms to determine no-cost extension eligibility.
Requesting an Extension
If the conditions are met and the award is eligible, work with your RAS CA to submit the request to the sponsor. Contact RAS at least 30 days before the project end date to request the extension.
If a written request to the sponsor is required, include:
- Title of the project
- Award ID
- Amount of time requested. The length of time should be in line with the funding available to support the research.
- Funds available
- Scientific justification for the extension
- Additional items by sponsor (for example, progress reports)
